About Department
The Department of Livestock Management and animal breeding and Genetics were established in1981 and 2005 respectively. Later on, in 2011 both departments were merged and called as Department of Livestock Management, Breeding and Genetics. Objectives of the department is produced postgraduates livestock production professional, well equipped with modern knowledge and practical experience to resolve animal Husbandry related issued of the farming community and play vital role in improving Pakistan economy through livestock production. Secondly department aim is to introduce knowledge of genetics through the wise use of appropriate breeding and molecular technological skills among the animal geneticists. Local animal population best matches to the production environmental conditions, thus their genetic improvement is vital for sustainable increased in productivity. The department engaged in supporting the livestock sector through training, research and technology transfer to various groups of the stakeholders. Currently the department focuses mainly on the following areas: Milk production, Dairy processing meat production and meat and animal by-products processing and technologies, Range and pasture resources, management and their utilization, Animal welfare and care, Breeds identification and breeding potential of various important traits of economic importance. In breeding and genetic aspect, Major emphasis is laid on characterization of local genetic resources, their conservation and genetic improvement for economic and future traits.
<br><br>This department offer various courses to the DVM undergraduate Composite Degree Program of the Faculty of animal Husbandry and Veterinary Sciences, Accredited by the Pakistan Veterinary Medical Council (PVMC) postgraduate and Ph.D degree programs.
<br><br>The Department has three regular Professor, one Associate Professor, one Assistant professor and four lecturers. Five of them are PhD qualified whereas the two faculty members Ph.D is under the process of acquiring.
<br><br>Besides teaching and research, three research projects, ALP (PARC), Pak Science foundation and HEC, have been successfully completed. So far four person has obtained Ph.D degrees from the department and 357 post-graduates qualified in the said discipline
