SOCIETY OF YOUNG AGRONOMISTS (SOYA)

Department of Agronomy
Faculty of Crop Production Sciences

Increases in global food grain production in the past few decades have largely been due to availability of high yielding varieties, better crop management, more knowledge/trainings of farms and other advances in Agronomy. Still, consistent efforts are needed to meet the food requirement of growing population especially in underdeveloped countries. Today food and energy shortages loom large across the world especially in resource poor countries.

Agronomy is the applied aspects of both soil and plant sciences dealing with field crops. It is therefore, directly responsible for the production of most food grains, and thus, is fundamental to productive and sustainable food grain production. Agronomy includes: seed science and technology, crop establishment and persistence under a range of environmental conditions, crop nutrition, weed management, agro-ecology and agro-climatology. It is always closely linked with soils and plant breeding efforts for more quantity and high quality products.

Research and training in agronomy is essential in providing innovative solutions to these challenges. Keeping in view these challenges, it has been felt that there should be a platform through which the glorious achievements, remarkable efforts and selfless services of the agricultural graduates especially agronomists in the crown of agricultural economy rightly called as the mother of agriculture can be reckoned and appreciated.
