CIMMYT is looking for young, innovative and motivated plant/agricultural researchers for developing climate resilient maize germplasm. Under the USAID (United States Agency for International Development) funded Project on 'Heat stress Tolerant Maize for Asia (HTMA)', the selected HTMA Research Scholars will be involved in a focused research program on developing heat stress tolerant maize germplasm for South Asia, as a part of their PhD program.

Qualified students from three of the HTMA project target countries (Bangladesh, Nepal, and Pakistan) who are beginning their PhD studies, and are interested in pursuing agricultural sciences for climate change adaptation and food security are invited to apply. The work will be done in collaboration with and under the guidance of a multi-disciplinary CIMMYT Asian Regional Maize Program team.


HTMA PhD Research Scholarships:
Two scholarships will be offered on a competitive basis by CIMMYT Global Maize Program as a part of the HTMA Project.

Scholarship duration: 3 years

Scholarship benefits:
Research costs (including international/local travel, as required and applicable), monthly stipend (based on stipend provided, if any, by the sponsoring Institution/University or a funding agency in the respective country), laboratory and office support, as required, book allowance, computer and PhD tuition fee (as applicable).

Eligibility Criteria:
  • M.Sc. in Agriculture or Plant Sciences in any of the followings:
    Genetics & Plant breeding
    Crop Physiology (with specialization in Stress Physiology)
  • Registered for Ph.D. program in any reputed institution/university in the following HTMA Partner Countries - Bangladesh, Nepal and Pakistan.
  • Endorsement by the PhD Program Supervisor and the Head of the Institution/University
  • Proficiency in English (both written and spoken)
  • Not more than 35-years old at the time of application 2

  • Application Procedure:
  • The following documents must be submitted at the time of application:
    Cover letter from the candidate
    Updated Curriculum Vitae, including list of research publications (if any) and three References
    Evidence of Registration/acceptance to a reputed Institution or University (this can be a copy of PhD Enrollment Certificate or a letter from the Registrar/Head of the Department of the University)
    Transcript of records (BSc and MSc - copy of coursework grades only)
    Letter of recommendation or endorsement from the University/Institution.
  • The application (complete with the above-mentioned documents) should be sent by email to CIMMYT-training@cgiar.org. Incomplete applications will NOT be processed.
  • Application must be received no later than December 15, 2012. Potential candidates are encouraged to apply as early as possible.
  • Only short-listed candidates will be called for Interview, and selected candidates will be further notified.
